If Rhett Butler and Mr. Darcy had a love child...

I tend to like my men how I like my books: Romantic Thrillers who are well versed, no grammar errors, and maybe just a little rough around the edges.

When I think of fictional male characters who I wouldn't mind rewriting myself into a story with, few come to mind. The brooding Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights, the lover and the fighter Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird, or the impossibly rich Jay Gatsby from, well you guessed it, The Great Gatsby.

But there are two men who stand out in my mind. Two totally different yet equally appealing pieces of eye candy (get it, cause you read about them). One is the perfect gentleman, while the other is the poster boy for scoundrels all over the world. Both are rich, handsome, and when it comes down to it, how could you resist the southern charm of one or the British accent of the other?

That's right ladies. I'm talking about Mr. Rhett Butler and Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy.

I do not think that Jane Austen or Margaret Mitchell had it in their minds that the characters they were creating would cause such a stir with female readers everywhere. How could these ladies have known that the men they invented would make dozens of pantaloons and petticoats drop? Let's examine each gentleman a little closer to determine why they are so desirable to lit chicks the world over.

With his southern charm and what I can conclude his chiseled good looks, Rhett Butler is the type of man who knows what he wants, takes what he wants, and doesn't "give a damn" who sees it. He's a man's man, a ladies man, and a rebellious black sheep from Charleston. Mothers, lock up your daughters.

"Is it hot in here, or is it just the burning of Atlanta?"

Mr. Darcy on the other hand is the complete opposite from Mr. Butler. He's well mannered, very stoic and statuesque, loyal, and a total lady killer. Not only does he stir up a frenzy with the young ladies in town, he's got the mothers going after his fortune, too! Husbands, lock up your wives!

"I'm not proud. I'm just written that way."

I suspect that if these literary Lotharios could be balled up into one steamy, dreamy, ooey, gooey, lead literature character, he would be able to rule the world. His wealth, charm and smoldering good looks would be no match for any lady (and some men for that matter). Can you imagine the powers he would possess? What would this dream boat look like?

Oh, Mr. Gyllenhaal. Only in my dreams.

Write Place, Write Time...

I thought long and hard if I wanted to keep the title of this blog "The Lit Chick." I haven't felt like a writer in a really long time. I started this blog back in 2009 while I was still in college and, in my opinion, at my peek of my writing creativity. I was a columnist for the University newspaper, I had a play that was selected to be performed at The Globe Theater of the Great Southwest, and I really felt like I knew what I wanted to do with my writing career. Then I just got lazy.

I don't want to go all dear diary on you, but juggling college, being a caretaker for both of my parents, and working a full time job really didn't leave much time for a blog. So it kind of just fell by the wayside. I really enjoyed it, and I still do. I just never had the time (or the energy) to just keep up with it.

While going through old journals and rehashing old manuscripts I swear I am going to finish one day, I decided to see if I still remembered my username and password for my Blogger. And what do you know, I did! I started rereading all my old blog posts and looking at what I had written. It made me reminisce about life in college, the people I knew, the professors I loved, and how happy I was while doing it.

I took the fact that remembered my my password as a sign from the literary Gods that I should try and pick my blog back up where it left off. I decided to keep with the Lit Chick schtick because, well, I am a lit chick. Self proclaimed lit chick, but a lit chick nonetheless. I have big plans for this blog. I'm starting to write again, draft again, and possibly finish that manuscript I am always talking about. Perhaps this is a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

But for now, let's just see where the blog goes.

A little Deb will do ya...

Welcome one and all to the relaunch of The Lit Chick blog. It took me a long time to think of a good topic to write about for my first blog back. Too much has happened since 2009 to update you all on everything that has gone on in my little world. I graduated college, got a great job working for a company I love, adopted two little fur balls who go by the name Lola and Linus, and oh yeah, MOVED TO AUSTIN!!!

The moving to Austin part...let's resume there.

After my mom passed away in December, I will admit that I was entirely lost. I think I stayed in a constant state of drunk for a good two months after. I packed up the house we had lived in for 14 years and moved in with family in Fort Worth. Now, for those of you who are just joining us, over the past year my mom Deborah had 3 hip replacements, numerous trips to the emergency room, a fallen hip implant, a Hematoma, and three rounds of physical therapy before passing away. Needless to say she put up an awesome fight.

Such a lady.

The two months that followed after she passed were really a blur. I loved the family I was living with, but each day was just a struggle to get up and function. I still drove past our old house every day on my way to work. I was reminded daily of how she was gone. I needed to get out.

Then the rescue team came.

Not only was I offered a position and a promotion in Austin, but my dear friend Sally (who is now my sister by proxy) offered me a room and a new life with her, her fiance TJ, and their little one Olivia. Instantly I was given a sister, a brother-in-law, and a niece. Not to mention a fresh start.

I took it.

I am kind of in a Catch-22. I want my mom to still be with me so I could tell her all the amazing things that are going on. The new people I am meeting, the new places I am visiting. But then again, if she were still with me, I wouldn't be here, living my life, experiencing these new adventures.

Best. Picture. Ever!

So, with this being my first post back, I dedicate it to my mom. My best friend and my secret keeper. I want to capture my new life in Austin using this blog. I want people to read it and respond to it. I want to share my story. In a way, I do get to live my life now. She gave me the opportunity to do that.

So stay tuned, because this story is just getting started.
